About LookSmart

LookSmart has announced yet another in a long line of business models.

Last April, they sent email to submitters claiming that their accounts were being "upgraded" to their "Small Business Express" model.

First of all, however, let us point out that it's not an upgrade: it is a model change. LookSmart is no longer a directory, but is a pay-per-click extravaganza. LookSmart now charges 15 cents per click but offers no way to target phrases.

There is currently at least one lawsuit and talk of a class action suit against the company for defrauding submitters.

Further, Excite no longer uses LookSmart, and although AltaVista does, the directory is no longer on the main AltaVista page. Both of these facts lead to the devaluation of LookSmart.

We are no longer recommending LookSmart due to both the inefficiency of their model and the fact that they were entirely underhanded about the change of business model.
